The objective of this association shall be to improve the economic condition of the membership through education, training and demonstrations of new skills, techniques, and knowledge in the art and science of commercial floriculture and all fields related there to.
Founded in 1966, the organization began when the Metropolitan Detroit flower growers sought a solution to high delivery costs for shipping and selling the majority of their product outside of Detroit. Twenty growers from throughout the metro Detroit area united to develop and promote a one day event that would increase public awareness of the great local availability of fresh, homegrown bedding flowers. That first event grew into Flower Day, which has become the first day of spring for many gardening enthusiasts.
With 100 members, the non-profit Metropolitan Detroit Flower Growers Association (MDFGA) is the largest growers organization in the United States and Canada. The organization has continued its commitment to selling more product closer to home by presenting Flower Day annually for over four decades.
MDFGA growers are the primary suppliers of plants and planting products for metro Detroit, Michigan and surrounding states. Growers are both retail and wholesale sellers, offering landscape plants, cut flowers and tropicals.
